The romantic place par excellence in Ascoli Piceno: Rua delle Stelle
Rua Delle Stelle is perhaps the most evocative road in Ascoli Piceno, almost a “rural path” that runs the river Tronto for a long way. The path winds from the Porta di Borgo Solestà and, skirting the medieval quarter of Porta Romana, reaches the former Church of Santa Maria Delle Stelle, today a private office. It is called “Rrète li mierghie” in dialect, “Behind the battlements” literally. The characteristic toponym helps to remember the ancient look of the road that flanked the medieval crenellated city walls.
Over the battlements, handicraft products were hung out for drying: tanned leathers, wools, silks, and dyed brocades. Today the walls have been replaced by a low and long parapet wall, that allows you to enjoy the view of the river flowing below, and of all the luxuriant vegetation that covers its high banks. On the other side of the road, there is a sequence of short houses and ruins of ancient medieval workshops and towers, reminding the city’s medieval past.
