{"id":27439,"date":"2015-02-13T13:22:01","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T12:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitascoli.webeing.net\/punti-interesse\/must-see-historical-sites-in-ascoli-piceno-the-roman-theatre\/"},"modified":"2021-04-13T11:30:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T09:30:14","slug":"must-see-historical-sites-in-ascoli-piceno-the-roman-theatre","status":"publish","type":"punti-interesse","link":"https:\/\/visitascoli.it\/en\/attractions\/must-see-historical-sites-in-ascoli-piceno-the-roman-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Must-see historical sites in Ascoli Piceno: The Roman Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearby the <strong>historic center of Ascoli Piceno<\/strong>, standing at the foot of <strong>Annunziata Hill<\/strong>, The <strong>Roman Theater<\/strong> is one of the <strong>most fascinating monuments<\/strong> that a tourist cannot miss.\u00a0Built on a pre-existing <strong>Italic theater<\/strong> used by the Picenes for their rites, is the same in which the Roman proconsul Quinto Servilio, with his defiant speech, triggered the rebellion that led to the Social War of 89 B.C. and the destruction of the Piceno capital.\u00a0Excavations between 1932 and 1959 bring to light the system of the hemicycle on which the spectators\u2019 stall seats stood.\u00a0The theater was northerly oriented and allowed spectators to enjoy the show without ever having the sun in their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>travertine seats<\/strong> are very interesting! They have a seat number mark (today&#8217;s numbered stands) and often the name of the lucky \u201csubscriber\u201d. Those seats are today preserved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitascoli.it\/punti-interesse\/i-musei-di-ascoli-piceno-il-museo-nazionale-archeologico\/\">State Archaeological Museum<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/visitascoli.it\/punti-interesse\/le-piazze-principali-di-ascoli-piceno-piazza-arringo\/\">Piazza Arringo<\/a>.\u00a0Other remains relate to the &#8220;orchestra&#8221;, which was the place where the choir stood: an exedra made in the &#8220;opus reticulatum&#8221; technique remains, but it had to look like an apsidal environment enriched by marble columns and mosaics, used as a meeting and waiting room.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the part of the stage that was undoubtedly imposing and rich in polychrome marble, has never been recovered.
