{"id":27281,"date":"2015-02-13T12:21:16","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T11:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitascoli.webeing.net\/punti-interesse\/luoghi-da-vedere-ad-ascoli-piceno-la-sala-cola-dellamatrice\/"},"modified":"2021-04-13T11:33:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T09:33:30","slug":"another-must-see-place-in-ascolipiceno-sala-cola-dell-amatrice","status":"publish","type":"punti-interesse","link":"https:\/\/visitascoli.it\/en\/attractions\/another-must-see-place-in-ascolipiceno-sala-cola-dell-amatrice\/","title":{"rendered":"Another must-see place in Ascoli Piceno: Sala Cola dell&#8217;Amatrice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>historic center of Ascoli Piceno<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, next to the monumental <\/span><b>Church of<\/b> <b>St. Francis, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located in the east wing of the former convent,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lies the <\/span><b>Sala Cola Dell&#8217;Amatrice, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which can be accessed through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/visitascoli.it\/punti-interesse\/itinerario-francescano-ad-ascoli-piceno-il-chiostro-maggiore-del-complesso-momumentale-di-san-francesco\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main Cloister<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today\u2019s hall is certainly smaller than the original one, which, in the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, served first as the church\u2019s Chapter House and later as the Oratory of Corpus Domini. When the hall became a possession of the Italian State, it was used as military barracks, while the Oratory was used as an armory. After the barracks were abandoned, this hall became the town fish market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the room had been used for different purposes, people had forgotten how important it had been in the past. <\/span><b>Cola dell&#8217;Amatrice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had been called by the <strong>Franciscans<\/strong> to fresco the walls of their Oratory and he had painted episodes of the Old Testament showing King Nebuchadnezzar and other characters, remembered for having lived lives and experiences similar to those of Jesus Christ. But when the original ceiling was lowered and covered with vaults, the frescoes, no longer visible, were forgotten. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1872, the artist Giulio Cantalamessa, while inspecting the cavity between the old and the new ceiling, realized the value of the paintings and suggested that they should be removed. After having been long kept in the parish hall of the convent, Cola\u2019s frescoes have been carefully restored and placed where they were meant to be.
