It is well-impressed by all visitors to the Archaeological National Museum of Ascoli Piceno – hosted at Piazza Arringo in the Renaissance Palace Panichi, belonging to the Spinola and Panichi families – the rare mosaic of imperial age depicting a virile face that looks like that of a young man or an old beard man, depending on the side from which you look: a fun optical game designed to cheer up the banquets of a wealthy Roman age owner. Ascoli Piceno, however, has a much older history than that of Rome and is shown by the many piceni finds that have recently been reorganized to allow people to learn about culture, traditions, customs, customs, ways of dressing and Living of an ancient people who over the years have worked well with the peoples of northern Europe and the East. The beautiful ceramic pots decorated with stylized figures of horses and birds, arms and jewels tell us about a population, the Picena population, able to combine practicality with beauty, functionality with the most refined decoration.

Recently, the collection of the Archaeological Museum has been enriched with numerous Roman finds found during the recent excavations in the historic city center. In the vast salon of the museum there is today an elaborate fifteenth-century frieze that once adorned the façade of the building.

The most recent museum of Ascoli Piceno, is the Museum of the High Middle Ages, is located at the Malatesta Fort, an imposing building – one of the most important and spectacular Renaissance fortifications in Italy and one of the most fascinating monumental sites in the city – which has undergone many transformations over the centuries: born as a place of worship and prayer, it was adapted by the architect Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane in a mighty fortress for the will of Pope Paolo III Farnese (1549).

Reopened after a long and complex restoration process, the Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno hosts numerous temporary exhibitions of contemporary art while on the third floor, since March 2013, they have found their definitive location for the early medieval finds from the city of Ascoli, From the territory of Acquasanta and the village of Castel Trosino, a small center very close to the city, where in 1902 an entire Lombard Necropolis was discovered and hundreds of burials were found with rich funeral kits that were moved to Rome to be exposed At the Museum of High Middle Ages set up at Eur. An agreement between the City of Ascoli, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Archaeological Heritage of the Marche allowed the partial reinstatement of some male and female kits that show the refinement achieved by the artisans of the era in the processing of metals and gold: Weapons, horseshoes, necklaces, earrings and rings reveal a technique of extraordinary beauty; The multimedia tools inserted inside the museum structure allow to deepen the knowledge of individual pieces through images and cards that reconstruct their function and provenance. So, the Museum of the High Middle Ages of Ascoli Piceno is a place dedicated to archeology that can make the visitor experience an exciting journey in the past using sophisticated technological tools.

Only very few cities of Italy may reserve the tourist the excitement of visiting a manufacturing Renaissance: Ascoli Piceno, you can do so thanks to the restoration of the ancient Cartiera Papale – very easy to get to just past the quarter Piazzarola, falling right into the river Carlos, crossing the bridge of Porta Cartara, realized for will of Julius II near the River, which provided the driving force needed to operate the machinery. Today a faithful and fascinating reconstruction of the building allows you to appreciate the wits with which the architects of the Renaissance planned industrial sites, combining beauty with functionality. Inside the building are also regularly hosted interesting Labs that offer to the visitors a chance to produce a sheet of the precious paper “bambagina” sought throughout Europe. Thanks to immersive media, currently the appealing setting, in ancient time dedicated to the drying of the paper, constitute the water Museum of Ascoli Piceno: this section offers, thanks to an interesting interactive experience, the opportunity to explore the issues related to human settlements and the transformation of landscape determined over time from the water element so fundamental to human life.

A large section of the Cartiera Papale permanently hosts the botanics collection of the ascolano naturalist Antonio Orsini, devoted primarily to the Apennine territory in which the scholar – that was one of the protagonists of the Risorgimento piceno – identified many new species which today bear his name. Inside the structure are arranged periodically temporary exhibitions dedicated to science and technology

Here, in Ascoli Piceno, the Contemporary Art Gallery “Osvaldo Licini”: a pole for contemporary
art housed in a Renaissance structure built for the Augustinian order, a structure that also hosts the prestigious City Municipal Library. With the creation of the Sant’Agostino Pole Cultural Center, in 2000 the city of Ascoli Piceno also had a space dedicated mainly to young people, where the most important collection of works by the painter Marchese Osvaldo Licini (1894 – 1958) who, after staying in Paris – where he had frequent Modigliani and Picasso – decided to retire to the small town of Monte Vidon Corrado.

Oswald Licini, a figurative painter in the 1920s, astratist in the 1930s, surreal in the 1940s and 1950s: three faces of the same artist who crafted the unforgettable icons of “Amalassunte” and “Angeli ribelli”, strong characters with wings, tail and horn, emblem of the eternal conflict between good and evil and paradigm of the turmoil of modern man.

The paintings by Lucio Fontana, Filippo De Pisis and Giorgio Morandi complete the path dedicated to the painting of the twentieth century, which closes with the drawings of Tullio Pericoli prepared for the decoration of the Sala Garzanti in Milan: a true triumph of literary and culture that makes The Contemporary Art Gallery “Osvaldo Licini” is one of the most interesting museums in the Marche region.

Set in the picturesque area of the historic center of Ascoli Piceno, between San Tommaso and Porta Romana, inside the Convent of the Workers Pie Sisters of the Immaculate Conception – built in the second half of the eighteenth century by the architect Maggi, still home of an important religious institute for the education of young people – a museum dedicated to the Venerable Francis Antonio Marcucci was set up.

This is a fundamental character for the history of Ascoli: born in 1717 by a noble family, prominent personality within the Roman church, appointed bishop of Montalto (1770) and later deputy of Gerente of Rome (1774), founder of the order of the Workers Pie Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Acquired by Pius VI in 1786 permission to return to the diocese of Montalto, since 1789 Marcucci took his place at the new “factory” he wanted to devote to the congregation he instituted, enriched with furniture, paintings and precious objects ordered in Rome.

To witness the passion with which Marcucci devoted himself to the formation of the Sisters, there remain many books written by him to teach them in sacred and profane disciplines, and to entice them more to study, taking care of their intellectual and practical education: an original and accurate training project that combines the rigor of a rational setting with the will to strengthen the faith of young educants.

Inside the museum, a rich and interesting permanent set-up allows to retrace the life and activities of Mgr. Marcucci, as well as the personal profiles of some sisters who over time distinguished themselves for their works. Continuing, one can get to know the story of the birth of the first female elementary school in Ascoli Piceno, until the Marcucci’s activity in the world; All of this walking immersed in pictorial beauty and interior furnishings, made up of ancient and prestigious furniture, enriched with precious objects and decorations.

The environments of the museum-library of Ascoli Piceno allow you to know all this the protagonist of the city’s religious life and to verify the originality of his project designed to enhance the role of women in the society of the time.
